Eddie Jones is set to quit as head coach of the Wallabies after leading the nation to its worst Rugby World Cup performance.

Rugby Australia brought the 63-year-old back to the Wallabies on a five year deal in January but since taking over, the team has managed just two wins – against minnows Georgia and Portugal – from nine games.

Jones was reported to have interviewed for the Japan job on the eve of Australia’s World Cup campaign but furiously denied any relation insisting he was “100 per cent” committed to the Wallabies.“I really take umbrage at people questioning my commitment as Australia coach."“No, I haven’t applied for a job for a long time,” Jones told The Australian this week.

The appointment of Jones came at the expense of David Rennie who was sacked at the end of 2022 with a year to run on his contract. Shortly after his return to the Wallabies was announced Jones caused confusion with comments made about the job on a UK podcast.“I’ve signed , but as I’ve made the mistake before, I’ve stayed too long.Jones immediately shook things up in the Wallabies set-up taking a hugely inexperienced team to the World Cup.
