Future generations might never see Texas blind salamanders, Government Canyon Bat Cave spiders, Ivy’s Cave millipedes, golden-cheeked warblers, whooping cranes, Guadalupe bass, Texas shiners, American bumblebees, Helotes mold beetles, big free-tailed bats, swamp rabbits, Texas horned lizards and more.at-risk species. Nationally, 12,000 species are at risk. One reason Texas has such a high number of these “species of greatest conservation need” is the state’s large size and variety of habitats.
The bill would “address those at-risk status and get those populations stabilized so they don’t become endangered,” Janice Bezanson of the Texas Conservation Alliance told us. “Because the endangered are not only expensive to recover, there are lots of impacts that private citizens, businesses and so on have to deal with.”
Species that become endangered are often not able to be saved, no matter the protections — that’s why it’s critical to act early.
