The probe is targeting the Operation Lone Star practice of arresting migrants who are trespassing on private property and holding them in jail without charges for weeks, often without representation. According to the report, the Justice Department wants to know whether those arrested as part of the border operation have faced “differential and unlawful conditions of confinement based on their perceived or actual race or national origin.”to the Justice Department calling for an investigation into Operation Lone Star.
They argue that the separate system that targets people due to “race and perceived immigration status” is “rife with civil rights abuses, including failures to provide basic access to process that lead to people languishing in pretrial detention for weeks on misdemeanor trespass charges.” Operation Lone Star’s alleged civil rights abuses are another example of how Abbott and other Texas GOP leaders prioritize polarizing politics over human rights and policy solutions. We hope the Justice Department’s investigation leads to more transparency and helps inform a more humane and effective way forward.
