Even for those Texans who await rodeo season every year, welcoming the Black cowboys who partake, the connection between trail riding and King’s vision of social, political and economic justice may seem elusive. It's always been“Horses are a sign of freedom,” he said, and, whether it was aspiration or reality, they can symbolize the ideal that"we have the liberty to do what we want in our own communities.
His great-great-grandfather, whom he knew as a boy, was enslaved on a plantation where he worked as a stable boy. In Houston, Bruno didn’t just find a home but created one. With his wife, he raised five children. In 1982, he left the group, and with several other riders, helped found NETRA. It offered a home to so many of the Black cowboys and riders, many also from Louisiana, who were living on the northeast side of town, where even today you can spot horses and their riders sharing the roadway with motorists.
