Will Hickman, Dan Hochman and Audrey Young are the best suited to shape the Texas...

for voting to delay the curriculum decision until 2025, when new and likely more conservative members will be in place. Hickman was the only Republican to side with Democrats in voting against the delay. His willingness to cross party lines is reassuring, and we hope he’ll be a moderating voice on what may be a more extreme board after this election.

We found Hickman to be refreshingly focused on the long-term success of Texas students. As chair of the ad-hoc Flight Plan Committee, he is working with board members to design a new class focused on improving students’ college, career and military readiness through individually tailored career exploration and options.

Whatever Hochman lacks in political savvy, he more than makes up for in passion for restoring “the integrity of education,” as he puts it. He’s got lofty ideas for achieving that, from lobbying the Legislature to eliminate STAAR testing, to promising to veto all new charter applications, to addressing cultural inequities in the curriculum standards that he feels leave Latin and Asian American history by the wayside.

Young’s ability to look at education issues from every perspective is reflected not only in her deep understanding of the extent and limits of the board of education’s purview — something many candidates seem to struggle with — but also in what she’s achieved so far.
