Perry faces charges related to driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an...

District 10 City Councilman Clayton Perry certainly could run for re-election, but that does not mean he should. Perry, in his third term, faces charges related to driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an accident, or hit-and-run, on Nov. 6. Like all defendants, he has a right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. But unlike other defendants, he is a sitting City Council member who is accused of endangering the lives of the very constituents he serves.

Perry recently returned to City Council after a leave of absence. His exuberant “here” at his first City Council meeting in January gave us pause. This was hardly a moment of triumph. And while Perry has stated he has “a lot to be thankful for” and has followed “all the appropriate measures as recommended by medical experts and will continue to do so,” he has hardly been candid with the public about the events of Nov. 6 and the treatment he has received since then.

Setting aside political considerations, we hope Perry is able to do the inner work necessary from such a nadir. But to have a public servant charged with DWI and fleeing the scene of an accident seek re-election is untenable. If Perry is truly committed to public service, he should recognize that his time on City Council should end and make way for a new representative. Otherwise, voters should deliver the message to him.
