that includes portions of south Houston, Allen, 83, has cultivated collegial relationships across the aisle that helped get legislation passed to help formerly incarcerated people get work licenses and students get better education.
Allen’s experience in education is particularly strong. She served in Houston ISD as a teacher and principal, then as part of the district’s central administration. She served on the State Board of Education for more than 10 years. She has a doctoral degree in education from the University of Houston.
“I serve on the education committee because I firmly believe that as an educator, if you don’t get the education you need, you will probably end up in the penal system,” Allen said. She went on to highlight work she’s done to improve opportunities for formerly incarcerated people to successfully integrate into society, and a bill passed in 2019 that required prisons toAllen’s opponent, Gerry Monroe, recently switched parties and is running as a Republican.
