Republicans loved to criticize Pelosi, but she governed capably, maintained Democratic unity, worked with Republicans and passed significant legislation. McCarthy made concession after concession, and in so doing weakened the power of the position. The most crucial compromise will allow one representative to force a “motion to vacate the chair” and overthrow the speaker. That means the new speaker may lead with an eye toward indulging the whims of the Freedom Caucus.
