Deidre van Deventer lost her leg as a girl when her brother accidentally set off a bomb. Now middle-aged and living in public housing in Cape Town, Deidre binge drinks and has succumbed to a belligerent victim mentality. When the cops pay her a visit, Deidre must confront a dark past. Several corpses have been unearthed at her family’s former property, and links to pro-apartheid terrorism are suspected but the victims have yet to be identified.

The narrative is notably slow off the mark for genre fiction, but the characters grow on you, and King delivers some sweet and funny moments in this romantic intergenerational adventure.. “Leave death to the professionals.” Nobel Prize-winning scientist Venki Ramakrishnan isn’t an undertaker, but he is certainly a professional and his observations of ageing and death are highly informed. Animals may fear danger and mourn their dead, but only humans, he says, are aware of the inevitability of it.
