A resident of Fox Hollow Court reported Oct. 13 that she was the victim of a scam after receiving a call from someone claiming to her grandson and stating that he had been arrested in South Carolina after causing a car accident.
The caller had her speak to another man, whom she was led to believe was the father of her grandson’s friend and also an attorney. That man instructed her to obtain $12,000 cash for bond and he would send a courier to retrieve it.
The woman, 87, said she withdrew $7,000 from her bank account and borrowed $5,000 from her son-in-law. She subsequently gave it to a man who drove to her home in a black sedan.As the investigation began, it was learned that similar incidents had occurred that week in Parma, Wickliffe, Garfield Heights, Brecksville and North Ridgeville. There was also evidence to suggest that the same suspects were involved.
