The shock death of an elderly woman from tetanus has prompted health authorities in New South Wales to remind the population to stay up to date on their vaccinations.
Her death was the third case of tetanus recorded in NSW this year, with two women in their 70s and 80s having contracted the infection recently.NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases Christine Selvey said the recent cases should serve as a reminder to older Australians to make sure their vaccines are up to date.Dr Christine Selvey has urged the state's elderly to make sure their vaccines are up to date.
"If there is any doubt, speak to your general practitioner about whether you should have a tetanus vaccine,” Dr Selvey said. A three-dose primary course of the tetanus vaccine is offered to infants through the National Immunisation Program.
