The head of Guide Dogs Victoria Karen Hayes has been temporarily stood down after she appeared in Liberal Party campaign material endorsing Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.
“The independent investigation is under way and is ongoing. The purpose of the investigation is to understand what happened and ensure it never happens again,” a statement from the charity said. Hayes also featured in a now-deleted video posted on Frydenberg’s Facebook page endorsing the treasurer, who is under threat from “Voices of” candidate Monique Ryan in Kooyong.
Under Australian law, charities risk losing ACNC registration for promoting a political candidate, but only if one of their stated purposes is to “promote or oppose a political party or a candidate for political office” – a rare occurrence. “The debate will be held in KOOYONG with questions from undecided KOOYONG voters,” she wrote on Twitter. It comes after Ryan yesterday rejected an offer by Nine, owner of The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald, to host a 30-minute studio debate between the two candidates that would have been broadcast on free-to-air TV on Thursday afternoon.
