The Greens will use their bolstered numbers in parliament to work with the teals to push the incoming Labor government to cut emissions more aggressively, minor party leader Adam Bandt has signalled.

“I expect that by the time that he comes back there may be a bit of a better understanding about the state of the House of Representatives and where the Labour gets a majority in its own right or whether they’re in a minority,” the Greens leader told ABC RN Breakfast. The Greens expect to have at least three lower house seats – Melbourne, Griffith and Ryan – and say the seats of Brisbane, Richmond and Mcnamara are still in play.

“It may be that the government only needs to get the support of the Greens to pass legislation. Conversely, if the opposition decides to oppose something, then our support is going to be critical to getting it through.”
