Scott Morrison says he will step down as Liberal leader after a thumping election defeat, and wished Anthony Albanese well as Australia’s new prime minister.“On a night like tonight, it is proper to acknowledge the functioning of democracy.
Morrison says while many pre-polls and postal votes are yet to be counted, he thinks it’s important to provide certainty . Morrison says the Coalition leaves government having restored Australia’s border security and funding for the ADF.He mentions investments in mental health, funding for mental conditions like cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy.He says his side of politics will never take regional Australia, or regional Australians, for granted.Morrison says Frydenberg is someone who should remain in parliament.
“As a result, I will be handing over the leadership at the next party room meeting to ensure the party can be taken forward under new leadership which is the appropriate thing to do. I’ve had the great privilege to lead this great party and lead this great nation.”He says family is the fabric of society.“But tonight, it’s a night of disappointment for the Liberals and Nationals, but it’s also a time for coalition and members and supporters all across the country to hold their highs head.
