PM warns of “arc of autocracy” from Moscow to Beijing; Defence Minister Peter Dutton says only way to preserve peace is preparing for war. Follow updates here.

The only way to preserve peace in the Pacific region is to prepare for war, Defence Minister Peter Dutton says as Prime Minister Scott Morrison warns of a new “arc of autocracy” stretching from Beijing to Moscow.

“We shouldn’t take for granted the sacrifice that was made by the Anzacs, or those in World War II or in Vietnam, in the Middle East, in every conflict in between, that somehow that will see us through to eternity without conflict in our region,” the defence minister said. Dutton warned China was “on a very deliberate course” and Australia had to stand with its allies to stare down any act of aggression in the Pacific.
