Penny Wong has announced the Albanese government will reinstate an Australian climate change ambassador; Labor is confident it will win Brisbane to make up its Griffith loss to the Greens. Follow updates here.
In Wong’s address, she said the Albanese government has committed to transitioning to a low carbon economy that will see the proportion of renewable energy in Australia’s national energy market increase to 82% by 2030.
She said “this is a different government and a different Australia and we will stand shoulder to shoulder with you our Pacific family in response to this crisis”. Wong has also announced the Albanese government will partner with Pacific countries to on climate infrastructure and energy projects as well as reinstate the role of Australian climate change ambassador.
“We understand that the security of any one Pacific family member rests on the security of all and we have a collective responsibility. And we face these challenges to secure our region’s interests today and in the future. And as Australians Foreign Minister, are committed to working with you and listening to you, this generation of Pacific leaders to navigate these challenges together,” Wong said.
She has also committed to create Pacific engagement visas that will provide a pathway to permanent residency in Australia for 3000 members of Pacific countries as well as $545 million over the next four years for Pacific defense and maritime cooperation.
