Last week’s federal budget has been generally well-received by voters but may not be enough to jump-start the Morrison government’s election campaign. Follow updates here.
Scott Morrison has the job in front of him to pull off another “miracle” win and secure a second coming as Prime Minister.shows the Labor Party holding a commanding 55-to-45 per cent two-party preferred lead over the Coalition.
But with 48 per cent of respondents disapproving of his performance, Mr Morrison’s overall -15 per cent net approval score is now 6 points worse than at the same point leading into the May 2019 federal election. The two in five voters who think the 2022 budget will make no difference to their personal circumstances is double the 20 per cent who were indifferent about the 2019 budget. The lukewarm response suggests that targeted cash handout and petrol-excise-cut election bribes give a less politically effective answer to the critical question of which party will make most voters better off.
His personal treatment of women is nothing like what is now being revealed of Labor hero prime minister Bob Hawke. And Mr Morrison’s supposed reprobation jars with the lived experience of Australia’s world-leading health and economic pandemic outcomes, and a 4 per cent jobless rate matched only once in nearly half a century.
On the other hand, 38 per cent of voters polled are yet to form an opinion on Mr Albanese one way or the other. The high number of undecided voters may give the Coalition strategists hope that the white heat of an election campaign can be used to negatively frame the left-wing Mr Albanese on economic management and national security issues.
