Employers want this year’s minimum wage increase to be tempered by an equivalent 1.3 per cent wage rise that they say workers will enjoy from the Morrison government’s one-off cost of living payments.

Innes Willox, head of the Australian Industry Group, says a moderate increase will build on the growth in jobs and hours that has lifted incomes more than wage rises have.The employer group argues this would still result in a 3.8 per cent increase for low-paid workers given the 0.5 percentage point increase in superannuation in July and the equivalent of a 1.3 per cent rise from the budget’s low- and middle-income tax offset increase.
