Election 2022: Who will replace Sheila Kuehl on LA County Board of Supervisors? Meet the 3rd District candidates
Mailboxes of San Fernando Valley and Westside voters are overflowing with political mailers from deep-pocket candidates vying for an open seat on the powerful Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
They are, in the order listed by the county Registrar-Recorder’s Office: Jeffi Girgenti, 56, small business owner; Lindsey Horvath, 39, city council member, city of West Hollywood and small business owner; Craig Brill, 56, dog walker; Henry Stern, 40, state senator; Roxanne Beckford Hoge, 56, business owner; Bob Hertzberg, 67, state senator.
Stern and Hertzberg want to move from advocacy and politics in Sacramento into implementing programs. Stern, who worked as an environmental lawyer and lecturer at UCLA, says his youth will bring a fresh perspective. He envisions moving from building political coalitions and writing bills that set policy to making a difference on the ground level. He has lived in Canoga Park, Warner Center and Chatsworth before moving back to Malibu to care for his 94-year-old father-in-law.
Stern wants to set up an affordable housing trust to help cities build more low-income projects. He doesn’t favor building further into the urban forest interface, where wildfires are a threat. He’d like to see a measured closure only after a new facility is built that would accommodate mental health needs in the Central Jail. He supports adding 5,000 acute psychiatric beds in facilities throughout the county.“I worry they are demoralized. I want to help with that,” he said.
