Electromagnetic Interference Behind Metro Tunnel Shutdown, State Library Station Completed

The completion of State Library station marks the final phase of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project, but revelations of electromagnetic interference causing a shutdown raise questions about ongoing challenges.

Electromagnetic interference EMI, a persistent challenge for medical and research facilities near the Metro Tunnel project, was also the root cause of a five-hour shutdown that stranded train drivers last month. This revelation coincides with the official completion of the State Library station, the final piece of the Metro Tunnel , marking the beginning of its final phase.

State Library station, a modern marvel, showcases stunning artwork by Danie Mellor, drawing inspiration from historical photographs of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung women preserved in the State Library archives. The station's architecture pays homage to the original 1854-built library, incorporating twelve colossal columns reminiscent of book spines, which support a striking glass entrance. A highlight of the station is the artwork on the glass panels, created by Danie Mellor, which portrays historic photos of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung women set against a modern-day backdrop. Furthermore, the station features exceptionally long descending escalators, stretching 12 meters longer than those at Parliament Station. The State Library station will integrate seamlessly with the existing Melbourne Central station, boasting its primary entrance at the intersection of La Trobe and Swanston streets, complemented by a secondary entrance on Franklin Street between RMIT and the City Baths. Passengers can easily transfer between State Library and Melbourne Central via a newly constructed underground concourse without needing to tap off their cards. The new Metro Tunnel stations are also adorned with numerous subtle design elements, including a recurring animal foot motif decorating the sprawling platforms. Designed by First Nations artist Maree Clarke, the carved granite footprints at State Library depict emus, bandicoots, kangaroos, and wombats, reflecting the diverse native fauna of the region. Each station further emphasizes its unique character by incorporating its own distinctive animal imagery.\The $15 billion Metro Tunnel project is slated to open to the public later this year with a soft launch involving limited off-peak services. However, Premier Jacinta Allan has refrained from providing a firm date for the full-service timetable, which is currently expected to be implemented in February. Rigorous testing is underway, encompassing trials of services running at frequencies as high as every three minutes in each direction. During an interview on Sunday, Ben Ryan, the executive project director of the Metro Tunnel, confirmed that the extensive shutdown that occurred on September 8 during testing was directly linked to electromagnetic interference. EMI poses a common challenge for projects in urban settings, but it has presented unique difficulties for the Metro Tunnel project due to the sensitivity of equipment, such as MRI machines and scanners. This equipment is essential to the operations of medical and research facilities concentrated near the new Metro Tunnel station at Parkville. Consequently, significant resources, including tens of millions of dollars, have been expended to shield equipment or relocate it to different areas. Authorities have also taken measures to reduce the electrical current flowing through the railway, a matter that was flagged in an Auditor-General’s report as potentially requiring further reduction. The challenges associated with EMI have even affected the planned future Arden station, located in North Melbourne, due to the costs involved in mitigating the interference.\Interestingly, last month's incident marks the first time that EMI issues have been publicly acknowledged in relation to activities within the tunnel itself. Initially, the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority declined to provide specific details regarding the incident, with a spokesperson initially attributing the shutdown to a procedural issue. On Sunday, Ryan initially downplayed the fault, describing it as merely a technical issue. However, after persistent questioning, Ryan admitted that the incident was related to electromagnetic interference and stated that the issue had been resolved. He elaborated that the EMI issue at Parkville had been addressed over a long period of time, and the resolution had been accepted by the three hospitals in Parkville: The Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Women’s Hospital, and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Consequently, the interference is not expected to impede the opening of the tunnel. The project's careful handling of such sensitive issues, and the commitment to providing safe and reliable public transport for passengers, demonstrates the level of work that is going on to make the Metro Tunnel one of Melbourne's most successful infrastructure projects
