Mayor Vener Muñoz of Rizal, Laguna, where the deaths occurred between Thursday and Sunday, declared a state of emergency in his town to deal with the situation, local media reported. Mr Muñoz banned the sale of lambanog in all stores in Rizal as the number of dead rose from seven to 11 on Monday, the Philippine Star reported.
Two people who had been in critical condition were improving, he told local radio. The coconut wine that was consumed had been made in his town, he added. Blood tests and samples of leftover lambanog would be collected and analysed on Monday, the Department of Health said.
