The 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off with 231 spellers. Eleven took the stage for the final round.

By Suryatapa BhattacharyaAlong with acclaim, the winner receives prizes including $50,000 and the Scripps Cup trophy. The Merriam-Webster Unabridged is the official dictionary of the Bee—every word for the competition comes from it.

The trophy features an open book decorated with bee filigree and gladiolus. Winners’ names are added to the walnut base, which honors the Bee’s headquarters on Walnut Street in Cincinnati.The Bee kicked off Tuesday with 231 spellers, including some from Canada, the Bahamas, Germany and Ghana. N'Adom Darko-Asare, a 12-year-old from Accra, Ghana, tied for 57th place.The first international participant, in 1976, came from Mexico City.
