Elgin has tripled the number of pesticide-free zones citywide, park officials said.
The effort started last year with three city-owned parks and open land sites, and another eight have been added to the list this year. The number of acres protected from pesticide usage is now more than 26, officials said.
The city has been working with nonprofit sustainable landscaping initiative Midwest Grows Green to develop a three-year management plan for a large area of turf grass at Lords Park, where the city also no longer uses synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. “The high organic matter content of the compost improved turf grass and soil performance at Lords Park by reducing compaction, increasing the water holding capacity and, most importantly, eliminating chemical inputs,” said Ryan Anderson, who heads Midwest Grows Green.The effort supports the goals and objectives in the city’s Sustainability Action Plan, which was adopted in 2011, and in the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Greenest Region Compact 2 , adopted in 2017, city officials said.
