Woodyard is charged with reckless manslaughter and was one of five people – three officers and two paramedics – indicted in McClain's death. As other medical experts have testified previously, Arnall told the jury that McClain died from ketamine toxicity. He said in his expert opinion that the carotid hold Woodyard used to help detain McClain would not have caused his death.
"Based on review, if unconsciousness even occurs, it would appear as though it may have lasted for some short number of seconds," Arnall said. Prosecutors contend that the carotid hold and the subdual and restraint of McClain led to low oxygen levels and a build-up of acid in blood known as acidosis. Those conditions, along with the fact that McClain inhaled some of his own vomit put him in grave danger before he was given ketamine.
