Elon Musk has sparked controversy by criticizing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his handling of historic child sex abuse cases, accusations that have ignited a political firestorm in the UK.
SIR KEIR STARMER , UK PRIME MINISTER: Those that are spreading lies and misinformation as far and wide as possible are not interested in victims. They are interested in themselves.
LAURA TINGLE: This is not the first time Elon Musk – the man President Trump appointed to co-chair a new advisory body to the US Government – has sought to influence international politics. Now he's done that for reasons which I, frankly, find very, very weird. He knows very little about Britain. He knows very little about the issues.
ALASTAIR CAMPBELL: Well, he's definitely, I mean, Rory Stewart, my podcast partner, openly says that he believes that Musk is a fascist. He's got fascist tendencies. I mean, you know, the Financial Times did an analysis today about his Twitter feed in recent weeks. I mean, if it was an ordinary member of the public, I think your family would be saying hold on a minute, could we just step in and try to calm you down.
LAURA TINGLE: How is the Conservative Party dealing with this because in some ways, it is more of a dilemma for them, isn't it? LAURA TINGLE: Elon Musk has also intervened in Germany, and this has created even more alarm across Europe, because Germany goes to the polls next month. Could you bring us up to date on what he's been up to there?
But I think, there's something very interesting going on in politics around the world where these hard-right forces are particularly trying to appeal to what they see as disenfranchised young men. Like populists all over the world, they don't really care about these people. They know that there's a voice that there they can tap into, and that's where the AfD base is to be.
