Will the world’s most incendiary past president return to Twitter now that ElonMusk has assumed control of it? Trump says he won't but the Democrats don't buy it. | ANALYSIS by US correspondent FarrahTomazin
It’s official: the world’s richest person has assumed control of one of the world’s most influential social media sites.
Trump has ruled out rejoining Twitter - at least for now - telling Fox News just before Musk’s deal was formally announced that he would stick to his social network startup, TRUTH Social.Credit:But even Trump’s closest allies don’t believe the former president will be able to stay away from the megaphone where he amassed almost 90 million followers - particularly given his own social media app, TRUTH Social, hasn’t exactly been a roaring success.
Behind the scenes, Trump and his loyalists are already working hard to elect proponents of the myth that the 2020 election was “stolen”, endorsing them as candidates for powerful positions at the state and national level. After all, some published opinion polls suggest that Biden is now the most unpopular US president in the modern era, struggling to cut through on everything from COVID and the economy to immigration policy and crime.
And then there’s the broader question: should the world’s richest man control a social network that serves as an influential platform of political and social discourse for more than 200 million users?
