Elsy Wameyo had the Australian music industry buzzing with her first EP. But in order to get the best out of herself, she had to leave the country.
"Growing up, I've always been known to be the saint," the Kenyan-born, Adelaide-bred rapper and singer tells Double J's Stacy Gougoulis.
Across Saint Sinner's 13 tracks, Wameyo allows herself some catharsis, digging through her experiences to give a realistic portrayal of her life at this early point of her career.While it might be early, that career has already been fruitful, including slots on big festival stages and a run of shows in arenas around the country with Aussie hip hop titans Hilltop Hoods.
"It's not in the name of stepping on anyone else, it's just understanding that you do deserve that respect," she says. "They always talk about, once you live in the motherland, there's just this spiritual connection," she says.
