Palestinian families are living in caves after their homes were being demolished by the Israeli army in what human rights groups have called a humanitarian disaster.

abc.net.au/news/israel-west-bank-where-palestinian-families-live-in-caves/101338728Emad Husheyah and his nine children live inside a cave. It's dark, cramped and, in his words, dangerous. But the 39-year-old father felt he had no other option following the demolition of his family's house by the Israeli military."There is no concrete to hold it together, or pillars for supporting the ceiling.Emad Husheyah's youngest child, Khadijah, is 18 months old.

Residents say they have nowhere else to go and have retreated into nearby caves to stay on the land they believe is theirs."The cave was full of snakes, scorpions, filth and rats. It was very frightful." Israeli authorities have controlled the land at Masafer Yatta since capturing the West Bank during the Six-Day War in 1967.

After decades of fighting, that case was finally decided earlier this year, with Israel's High Court ruling that Palestinian dwellers had not been permanent residents of the area when the declaration was made. "I was born in theses caves, in November 1955. I was born in that cave, over there," he says, pointing to his left.
