The Labor government’s decision to reject an invitation from the United Kingdom and the United States to bolster the deployment of civilian nuclear technology has come under fire as world leaders gather at COP29.

Ed Miliband, the UK energy secretary, and his US counterpart David Turk on Monday signed an agreement at COP29’s Baku, Azerbaijan location to invest “billions of pounds worth of nuclear research and development”.

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles put the prospect of Australia joining the pact to rest during Question Time. Picture: NewsWire / Martin Ollman He continued to attack the Opposition Leader for previous comments where he said a propulsion system “burns energy”. “We know that, at COP28, there were 31 countries who signed up to tripling energy derived from zero emissions nuclear technology.Adding to the backlash over Labor’s approach to net zero, shadow energy minister Ted O’Brien, a staunch nuclear power advocate, said in parliament he was hopeful the Albanese government had changed its position on nuclear after reading the initial UK government release.

“The Climate Change and Energy Minister has been on record many a time suggesting that the real cost of Labor’s plan to deliver a net zero electricity grid is $122bn,” Mr O’Brien said in parliament on Tuesday. “The Frontier Economics team, the independent body, costed Labor’s plan. Did it cost $122bn? Guess how much it really cost? $642bn.
