The new transport secretary has revealed his longstanding friendship with premier, but insists his appointment does not represent “some kind of conspiracy”.
NSW Transport secretary Josh Murray and his wife donated $1450 across three separate Labor events, including an event with Premier Chris Minns in Kogarah – none of which were disclosed during his recruitment, a parliamentary inquiry into his appointment has heard.
The figures are in addition to the $750 Murray and Langton donated to Haylen’s election campaign last year. Latham asked: “Don’t you think you’re delusional about the ethics that should apply? You’re being paid a lot of money in a very important position for which the recruitment agency said you weren’t qualified, you’ve contributed a significant amount of money to a Labor campaign undeclared. Isn’t that just ethically unacceptable?”Earlier, Murray rejected the idea his appointment was “some kind of conspiracy”, as he revealed his friendship with the premier stretched back 20 years.
Murray said he first met Haylen at a wedding seven years ago, but could not say the number of times they had met since. His relationship with Premier Chris Minns began 20 years ago when they both worked in Macquarie Street as political staffers. He characterised their relationship as “friends”. NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen faced media after scrutiny over her appointment of a former staffer as transport secretary.Pressed on the details surrounding his recruitment, Murray said he did not disclose the $750 donation he made to Haylen’s election campaign, nor his recently ended ALP membership.
