USC and UCLA are heading to the Big Ten. Geographically far-flung super leagues are forming. SethWEmerson has one question for college athletics… What are we doing?
are going to the Big Ten, seemingly hastening the rush to bloated, geographically far-flung super leagues — that did happen? OK, OK, so a quick question:Oh, it’s a fun parlor game to talk about this conference adding these schools, that conference reacting by adding these schools, moving these pieces around in our minds. And it means a lot of money for the already-rich people who run universities, conferences and television networks.
It makes little sense for tradition, student-athlete welfare, and general fairness around college athletics. It’s speeding up a sense of haves and have-nots. There are now 131 schools in the FBS, 350 that play Division I basketball, and nearly 7,000 that play a Division I sport. And yet this is being driven for the sake of 30-to-40 football programs.
This is happening because of market forces, which is why you can’t blame Greg Sankey, Kevin Warren and the people in charge of making these moves. Kill or be killed. It’s the result of the main problem in college athletics: Nobody is in charge.
There’s another part of this that rarely gets mentioned: The lack of transparency. The news about USC and UCLA was broken and announced on the same day. No time for debate within the conferences, or within the two schools. That’s the way it’s been all these years, such as Maryland leaving for the Big Ten, a decision still debated among its alumni, but done by cloak and dagger and by a select group of people, rather than in the open so everyone invested in the move could have a voice.
