Climate Analytics says onshore emissions of proposed fracking understated by up to 84% in ‘a rosy picture that simply doesn’t reflect reality’
Empire Energy's Carpentaria-1 gas exploration well in the Beetaloo Basin. A new report says proposed gas projects in the basin would add up to ‘11% of Australia’s 2021 emissions’.Empire Energy's Carpentaria-1 gas exploration well in the Beetaloo Basin. A new report says proposed gas projects in the basin would add up to ‘11% of Australia’s 2021 emissions’.
Climate Analytics examined this report and found it “underestimated emissions for the Beetaloo project and its associated LNG production facilities across the board, across all areas of the proposed project, from methane leakage on extraction to liquefaction emissions intensity”. The Climate Analytics analysis finds the GISERA report significantly underestimated projected methane leakage associated with gas projects by at least 56%; underestimated the emissions that would arise from liquefied natural gas production by 57% to 89%; and underestimated the intensity of direct emissions associated with gas projects by 44% to 110%.

Industrial Region in France Takes Steps to Capture CO2 EmissionsThe Dunkirk area in France, known for its heavy industrial activity, plans to capture its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The region produces more CO2 than any other industrial area in the country due to the production of steel, cement, and fertilizers. A plant in Rety, operated by Belgian company Lhoist, emits about 700,000 tonnes of CO2 annually during the production of quicklime. By 2025, the plant aims to install a mini-factory to capture the CO2 emissions. Carbon capture and storage will be a key topic at the upcoming UN COP28 climate talks.
