Storm star Brandon Smith will miss three matches after a character reference from Michael Maguire and his own remorse swayed the NRL judiciary from a suggested month-long ban | SMHsport
Storm star Brandon Smith will miss three matches for calling referee Adam Gee a “cheating bastard” after a character reference from Michael Maguire and his own remorse swayed the NRL judiciary from a suggested month-long ban.
Panellists Tony Puletua and Paul Simpkins took 20 minutes to establish Smith’s punishment, weighing his contrition against the impact his comments could have on young players and referee participation. A written reference from Maguire, Smith’s coach at New Zealand, was tendered by Ghabar alongside reference to the 26-year-old’s relatively clean judiciary record.“He is an exceptionally passionate and committed player. He’s a larrikin but has always shown he’s always respectful towards match officials. I find it out of character he has acted this way towards a referee.”
