Voluntary assisted dying laws have been formally approved by the West Australian parliament
Premier Mark McGowan said it was a significant moment for the state.
“In this parliament, we have big hearts, and we are willing to take political risks to do the right thing,” he said.Much of the parliamentary debate was heated and emotional, with even Labor MPs critical of the government for its handling of the contentious legislation. MPs were granted a conscience vote and Labor backbencher Adele Farina was among the dissenters in the upper house. It is expected to be another 18 months before eligible patients can access the scheme.
Under the legislation, terminally ill adults who are in pain and likely have less than six months to live - or one year if they have a neurodegenerative condition - will be able to take a drug to end their lives if approved by two medical practitioners.
