union, but management is challenging many of the votes, claiming those dancers are not direct employees of the club.
Actors’ Equity, which represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in live entertainment, filed a union petition with the National Labor Relations Board in August. The board conducted a vote via Zoom on Monday, Nov. 7. Eighteen votes in favor of unionizing were received by the NLRB out of the 29 dancers and one club DJ who were eligible to vote, a union official said. The club’s management challenged votes from other dancers on grounds that they aren’t directly employed by Star Garden. “Reagan,” one of the dancers at the club and a lead union organizer, said she wasn’t surprised by management’s tactics.
Actors’ Equity spokesman Jamie Horwitz said the NLRB wouldn’t hold a union election for independent contractors. Still, the road ahead will likely take some time.If the dancers succeed, they will become the only strippers in the U.S. to have union representation and the first to be represented by Actors’ Equity.
