Builders have blasted Labor’s ‘secure jobs code’ for tenderers to Commonwealth projects as “outrageous” and fear it will require them to get union agreements.
Employers have blasted Labor’s endorsement of a procurement code for federal projects that will privilege union rights and wages, calling it union “racketeering” that threatens to drive up costs of construction projects.
“It is outrageous for unions to think that government will create laws that mean the decision about who builds roads and hospitals comes down to who shows most support for union campaigns,” she said.“We hope the government strongly rejects these kinds of policies and if not, you have to ask yourself, who is running the country, the Labor Party or the CFMEU?”
However, Ms Wawn said if ethical treatment was a consideration for successful tenders, “then the long history of unethical and unlawful construction union conduct should also be a factor”. “The government will be raising the minimum standards for Commonwealth contracts out of the reach of small businesses,” he said.
