It has been closed since last year

An empty shop in a Nottinghamshire town could be turned into a new takeaway. The closed shop in Eastham Road, Arnold, could become a hot food takeaway, if fresh plans are approved by Gedling Borough Council.

The two-storey property sits at the north eastern end of a small parade of shops. It was last used as a charity shop and has not been occupied since 2022. Documents submitted on behalf of applicant Muharrem Karadaban argued the eatery would not be large enough to have "any undue impact on the viability of businesses in the locale nor the town centre". It was added that takeaways were not uncommon within small shopping parades and that four jobs would be created. The takeaway's opening hours would be limited, trading from 12noon to 11pm. No changes would be made to the outside of the shop, according to planning documents.

There is a flat above the prospective takeaway, which is currently occupied. The applicant's planning agent said the character of the area would not be impacted by the change. In a planning document, agent MDA, on behalf of applicant Mr Karadaban, said: "It is considered that the proposal would bring back into a viable use a vacant retail unit within a small parade of shops and create employment opportunities." The planning application is pending consideration by Gedling Borough Council.
