South Australia's Kangaroo Island was devastated by bushfires over the summer and there were concerns an endangered species of cockatoo had become extinct. The fire was started by a lightning strike which rapidly burnt approximately one third of the Island’s vegetation. Fears for the island’s endangered glossy black cockatoo population were quelled after researchers discovered the birds had started breeding again.
