Endangered species are being pushed to the brink of extinction on Kangaroo Island by feral cats, with the deadly summer bushfires making the problem much more serious, conservationists have warned.

He keeps a record in his notebook of each cat he has killed and turned his American River home into a museum-like shrine to raise awareness about feral cats."I don't hate cats, I just hate the feral ones."Mr Green has been widely recognised for his two decades of conservation work, including by Natural Resources Kangaroo Island, as the island's feral cats maim threatened species including the Kangaroo Island dunnart, echidna and bandicoot.

But the project leader at Natural Resources KI, Dr James Smith, said he had his "fingers crossed" they would deliver on that plan. "I think with the Dudley, it's a very viable proposition to remove cats, the whole of the island by 2030? Well, fingers crossed," Dr Smith said. There is currently no feral cat eradication work being done on the western end of the island — an area hit hard by bushfires in January, and where many threatened species, including the dunnart and echidna, live."I really think cats are the biggest threat to the biodiversity of our threatened species, apart from wildfires of course which we've just experienced.
