Australia’s energy crisis is no surprise after years of pushing coal out, but more wind and solar will not increase reliability, according to the CEO of the coal miner.
Australia’s energy crisis is the consequence of efforts to accelerate the demise of coal from the national electricity market, and increased generation from wind and solar will not eliminate concerns about reliability, Whitehaven’s Coal’s chief executive officer Paul Flynn said.suspending the spot wholesale electricity market
The crisis has been fuelled by about 25 per cent of Australia’s coal generation being offline due to faults and maintenance – which Mr Flynn said is the consequence of efforts to accelerate the decline of the country’s traditional electricity source.
While lawmakers and regulators are optimistic that the market intervention will ease the threat of blackouts, it has done little to quell the fierce debate about how to stabilise Australia’s energy market while also meeting a net zero by 2050 pledge. Mr Flynn said there is a “disconnect” between aspiration and the practicalities, and Australia’s largest sources of renewable energy are not reliable.
