AGL has shut down the first of the three remaining units at the Hunter Valley site on Monday, with no discernible impact on the rest of the market.

AGL confirmed the unit was switched off as expected on Monday morning, with the remaining two units to close on April 26 and 28.

Unit 4 at the Hunter Valley site went offline about 8.25am on Monday, said Josh Stabler, managing director at energy adviser Energy Edge. The unit had been operating at more than 300 megawatts until Sunday evening, and was then powered down in stages, according to the firm’s data. “We are progressing as planned with the staged process of shutting down the units this week,” an AGL spokesman said.

The next major coal power closure, Origin Energy’s 2880MW Eraring plant on the NSW Central Coast, is due in August 2025, and some energy executives and analysts say this might need to be delayed.after the failure of a critical power market monitoring system on AusNet’s high-voltage grid system.

She said the company is building a platform called Flexiworks to help make hybrid working “work for Australia”. “We are continuing to invest in our regional store strategy, we have a number coming up both around the country and they are a larger footprint because we know we are a destination retail and that demand is there from our regional customers,” Ms Hunter told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood. “We also through COVID spent $20 million reflowing our stores to get those right ranges into store so that when all of our stores were back open, we had that right range that suited that hybrid working environment.”
