The electricity generation giant is part of a consortium that wants to build 21 mega-turbines off the coast of Gippsland. It faces significant competition.
There are already 37 proposals for projects in the region, only 6 will go aheadEnergyAustralia has joined the ranks of major electricity suppliers seeking to elbow into the country’s offshore wind sector, taking a stake in a project proposed off the coast of Victoria that could replace ageing coal generators.
“Each consortium member is a leader in their field ... it’s a very exciting model, and we have aligned it to tackle all the problems we normally see in new markets,” said Maya Malik, chief executive of Elanora Offshore. , an established energy trader and retailer that operates across 24 markets in Europe and specialises in aggregating corporate power purchase contracts. The newly revealed consortium is one of about 37 proposals submitted to the federal government for large wind farms off Gippsland, of which only five or six are expected to secure licences.
“We see offshore wind as a clean energy source that can replace part of the capacity lost through the retirement of coal-fired generation, while also providing a source of new employment for our workers at the Yallourn power station,” said Dan Nugent, head of portfolio development at EnergyAustralia.
