After almost six decades, England finally bag that elusive piece of international soccer silverware - as the resurgent women’s team topple Germany on home soil.
| After the English men’s team almost “brought football home” in their European Championship final last year, the job and the glory of winning England’s first soccer silverware since 1966 fell to the women.
One year and one century later, the usually luckless Lionesses are back, big time - achieving the result that has long eluded their male counterparts.“It’s a home-nation tournament, and we delivered. We finally brought it home,” said former England captain Fara Williams. The night began with a fly-past from a trio of Royal Air Force jets piloted by all-female crews. Wembley was almost at capacity and Trafalgar Square in central London was packed with fans watching it on a big screen - all signs of the new era that has dawned in England for the increasingly popular women’s game.
At the other end, though, England were equally probing, powerful and pacey. Fran Kirby headed it straight to the keeper as early as the fourth minute. By the 20-minute mark, England had Germany pinned to their goalmouth.Germany recovered, and the match became a tight, defensive arm-wrestle between two evenly matched teams. Both sides had heart-in-mouth chances to get the ball in the net, but neither could overcome their opponent’s defensive organisation and nail a goal.
