England's 26-man squad for the World Cup to be named today with James Maddison the big talking point
England have a vast array of talent in almost every position and boss Southgate will have to narrow that down.
However, Southgate will name his final England squad before the final round of Premier League fixtures this weekend – with the announcement expected onSouthgate hinted at his World Cup plans when he announced his squad for England’s Nations League games against Italy and Germany in late September.
Teammate Kyle Walker has been battling an injury, too, but is likely to be given every chance to make the plane. Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson is a shoo-in for a midfield spot, while James Ward-Prowse could get the nod due to the Southampton midfielder’s set-piece prowess.James Maddison has been outstanding for Leicester but is considered an unlikely pick despite being in great form, with reports he is braced to miss out.
Graeme Souness, Glenn Hoddle and Danny Murphy have all told talkSPORT in recent days he must make the 26-man squad.“I love him, I think he’s one that should be in the England squad,” said ex-England boss Hoddle.“I’d take James Maddison 100 per cent. Absolutely 100 per cent. He’s the most creative English player in the Premier League at the moment.
While 24 of the 32 teams will be based within 6 miles of each other in Doha, England’s hotel is in Al-Wakrah, a small beachside town about 25 minutes drive south of the capital.
