Regis Resources is cancelling its proposed gold project in NSW after the federal environment minister vetoed its site for a tailings dam.

The company, which reported its results on Thursday, is clearly frustrated by the damning result provided by Canberra last Friday.This sentiment will be reflected across an entire mining industry already apprehensive about the minister’s proposed reforms to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation laws adding yet more delays and roadblocks to any development.
This was despite the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council – the legally responsible cultural authority under NSW legislation – finding the establishment of the tailings dam there would not disturb any areas or artefacts of “high significance”.– to announce a “partial” Indigenous protection declaration over the headwaters and springs of the Belubula River.
This was despite the company previously warning her, including in writing in June, that the project would not be viable should she make a declaration under Section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.
