Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek says the environment needs a “changed system”.

She said without structural change, Australia will be resigning itself to “another decade of failure” without the tools we need to “arrest” the nation’s environmental decline.

“We all want to pass on a healthy environment to our children and grandchildren, and that’s why I’m also happy to announce today that we will expand Australia’s national estate,” Ms Plibersek said during her address at the National Press Club. “Our government will set a goal of protecting 30 per cent of our land and 30 per cent of our oceans by 2030.”
