People living next to a controversial mine south of Perth believe groundwork has commenced for its expansion, while the company says it has the necessary approvals to start investigative geotechnical work.
More than 100 people gathered to protest the proposed Worsley Alumina expansion at the Quindanning Hotel on October 12. Mining company South32 says it has started investigative geotechnical activities on the banks of the Hotham River.
The looming growth of South32's Worsley Alumina project has been the subject of significant environmental and cultural concern among neighbouring communities of Boddington, Quindanning and Wandering since the proposal was released. The works are part of investigative geotechnical surveys to assess the site of a proposed haulage road across the river for future mining operations.ABC South West: Andrew WilliamsEnvironmental Action and Protection community group leader Josie Sherlock said she was notified on Monday by Indigenous monitors on site, who were "shocked and upset" by the impact to the culturally significant waterway.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.A rally against the project attracted more than 100 people to Quindanning last week with attendees including local farmers, LEAP members and other environmental advocacy groups.
