The SA government has proposed to use a site in Gillman to store and process spoil from a major transport project, but an environmental group says those plans may have major adverse effects on crucial wetlands nearby.

An environmental group says a proposal to move and process spoil from a major road project to an industrial area in Gillman might have serious impacts on the adjacent wetlands. The development application is being assessed by the State Commission Assessment Panel, which will make a recommendation to the Planning Minister.

A development application currently before the State Commission Assessment Panel shows the Department of Infrastructure and Transport expects to remove about 7.5 million tonnes of spoil from the project site. Ms McMahon says the wetlands provide a crucial role in filtering stormwater from central Adelaide into the Port River and is concerned the filling of the land will cause soil at the site to flow into the wetlands.

In a submission to SCAP the Environment Protection Authority said an ongoing site contamination audit at Gillman had begun, but had not yet been completed. "We do flora and fauna surveys. We do ecological surveys. That forms part of our development application," he said. But before anything is constructed there, it first needs to be filled up to 3 metres.

"There is nothing that would identify to us that would restrict this land from not receiving or having the benefit of receiving this material," he said.Lot 501 was previously in the spotlight after a 2013 deal saw Renewal SA — then the Urban Renewal Authority —
