EPA held off testing for dioxins, arguing that because they are ubiquitous in the environment from other widespread sources like burning fossil fuels, it may be hard to tell whether any contamination found at the site was present prior to the crash.
EPA on Thursday ordered Norfolk Southern to begin testing for dioxins, a family of toxic chemicals that cause cancer and various other ailments, at the site of the East Palestine, Ohio, train crash.
But EPA had held off on testing for them, arguing that because dioxins are ubiquitous in the environment from other widespread sources like burning fossil fuels, it may be hard to tell whether any contamination found at the site was present prior to the crash. Dioxin testing is also expensive, though EPA will require Norfolk Southern to pay.
Because of dioxins’ ubiquity and the long time they last in the environment before breaking down, EPA said it ordered the railroad to conduct a study of dioxin levels in parts of East Palestine not affected by the derailment to compare to affected sites.
