Vic Bákin's latest book, 'Epitome,' documents the impact of war on Ukraine through a collection of powerful photographs.
Vic Bákin, a self-taught photographer based in Kyiv, has spent years documenting Ukrainian youth, particularly focusing on queer communities and subcultures. As war engulfed Ukraine , the project took on a new, somber tone. Many of Bákin's subjects would now be called upon to fight. 'The process of making these palm-sized prints became, for me, a contemplative search for meaning in a wartime reality,' he says.
A new book, titled 'Epitome,' combines photographs from Bákin's archive with recent images captured in war-torn areas, all printed in a makeshift darkroom within his apartment. Bákin's journey into the heart of conflict led him to places like Horenka, a village northwest of Kyiv ravaged by the Russian invasion. There, amidst the ruins, he encountered a man whose entire house had been reduced to rubble. The man, living in a makeshift shed with his dog, showed Bákin his Kiev 60 camera, a poignant symbol of resilience amidst destruction. The photographer traveled across war-torn regions, documenting the devastating impact on homes and lives. He captured images of ruined houses, bullet-riddled walls, and the stark reality of abandoned landscapes. Despite the overwhelming sense of loss, Bákin sought to convey other emotions through his imagery, capturing moments of hope and defiance.He photographed sunflowers, a national symbol of Ukraine, sprouting amidst the debris, a reminder of the enduring spirit of the nation. Encounters with storks, seen as symbols of family well-being, offered glimpses of life-affirming beauty in a world consumed by war. Bákin also captured portraits of individuals deeply impacted by the conflict. He photographed Pasha and Ruslan, a couple forced to flee their homes in Donetsk and Kharkiv, finding temporary refuge together in Kyiv. Sasha, a young man from Mariupol, whose story mirrored the enduring struggles of many Ukrainians, became a powerful symbol of resilience. Bákin's photographs are not just documentation of war; they are intimate portraits of human experience, capturing the resilience, loss, and enduring hope of the Ukrainian people
